The
West
Northumberland Wild U11 B team are headed to the
OWHA’s Championship
Weekend, after knocking off the Orangeville Tigers in 2 games.
Playoff Recap:
Game 1: The Wild opened the series on home ice, hosting the Northern
Division Champion Tigers, at the Jack Burger on March 14. The teams were
scoreless through two periods, before the Wild opened the scoring at the 10:02
mark of the third on a goal from Kenzie S. (unassisted). The hometown girls followed that up with two
more third period goals from Alexis M. at 8:52 (assisted by Ally T.
and Kenzie S.) and Haevan D. at 8:05 (assisted by Maddy L.). Dylan E. was able to turn aside
all attempts from the Tigers to secure another playoff shutout and preserve
the 3-0 win.
Game 2: The Wild travelled to Orangeville for Game 2 on March 22, with
intentions of closing out the series. After
a scoreless first period, West Northumberland found the back of the net at 5:22
of the second period on a goal by Kenzie S. (Assisted by Alexis M.). Only a few minutes later, at 2:38, Kenzie
S. (unassisted) split the Tigers’ defense to put the Wild up 2-0. The
Wild went to work in the third in an attempt to preserve the lead and managed
to add another goal at 8:18 Kenzie S.’s hat-trick goal (assisted by Aubree
R.). The Tigers pulled their goalie
in an effort to fight their way back into the game, but the Wild fought hard
right to the end. The Tigers did manage to beat Dylan E., with 3 seconds
remaining, to spoil the shutout but the Wild came out with a 3-1 win.
This team should really be commended for their playoff run, where
they have put up the following stats:
*A 5-1-2 record, with series wins over the North Durham Blades, Peterborough Ice Kats and Orangeville Tigers.
*Outscoring their opponents 12-4, over those 8 games…for a goals against average (GAA) of 0.500.
*Dylan E. has recorded 5 shutouts and the team has held their opponents to 1 or fewer goals in 7 of the 8 games.
The U11 B team will now advance to play for the OWHA Southern League Tier II Championship in
the OWHA’s Championship Weekend, with the title game being played on
Saturday March 28 at Westwood Arena.
They will now await a winner to be named from a series being played
between St. Catherines (South Division), Toronto Leaside (Central Division) and
Guelph (West Division).
