WNGHA Canadian Tire Peewee C Bring Home Silver
West Northumberland Wild’s Canadian Tire Peewee C hockey team travelled to St. Thomas over the weekend of December 2-4, 2016 to participate in the Panthers on the Prowl Tournament.  The Wild were one of eleven teams to participate in the Peewee C Division.  The Wild girls brought home the Silver Medal, after falling to the Lambeth Lancers in the Championship game.  


The Wild opened their round robin play on Friday, December 2, losing their first game, falling 1-0 to the Grand River Mustangs.  The Wild out-chanced the Mustangs; however, the Mustangs goal tender stood tall and did not allow any goals.  The Wild rebounded in game 2, downing the Lambton Attack 6-1.  Game 3 on Saturday, December 3 also brought a win for the Wild, blanking the Mitchell Meteors 2-0.  The final game of round robin on Sunday, December 4 was also a win, downing the home town St. Thomas Panthers 4-1.  The Wild finished on top of their division with a record of 3-1 and 6 points in round robin play, which earned them a spot in the semi-final game.

 

The Wild outscored their opponents 12-3 in round robin play, including one shut out for goalie Makenzie Walter.  Leading scorers in round robin play were Ashley Condon (3 goals), Liza MacDonald (2 goals, 1 assist) Kaia Cameron (1 goal, 2 assists), Shannon Scott (2 goals), Ella Watson (2 goals), Maria Kinsey (1 goal, 1 assist).

 

The semi-final game was played Sunday, December 4 at 1:00 pm.  The Wild faced off against the Waterloo Ravens, who finished second in their division.  The semi-final game was an evenly matched game, which showed in the first period, as neither team allowed a goal.   Waterloo took the lead just under 2 minutes into the second period; however, the Wild fought back and tied the game with 1:39 left in the period.  Liza MacDonald scored on a tape to tape pass from Kaia Cameron.  Reese Morris earned the second assist.  The period ended in a 1-1 tie.  Both teams came out strong in the third period, looking for that all important second goal.  The Wild were rewarded with that chance 3 minutes into the third period.  Jordyn Mackey scored on a scramble in front of the Waterloo net.  Assists were credited to Meghan Massey and Katie Coupland.  The Wild were able to hold off the Ravens for the remaining 9 minutes of the third period, including the last 1:15 when the Ravens pulled their goalie in an attempt to tie the game.  The Wild held on to win the game by a score of 2-1.

 

The semi-final win earned the Wild girls a place in the Gold Medal Championship game.  The Championship game was played Sunday, December 4 at 5:00 pm.  In the Championship game, the Wild faced off against the Lambeth Lancers.  The Wild came out strong and had numerous chances, but were unable to find the back of the net and fell 9-0 to the Lancers.  Each girl was presented with a Silver Medal after the game.

 

Head Coach Scott MacDonald praised the team saying “The girls have been committed to the team since August and all of their hard work and dedication have paid off by making it to the Gold Medal game in St. Thomas.  Their sportsmanship and professionalism was noticed by other centres on and off the ice.”

 

The Wild Peewee C team sit in second place in the East Division of the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League with 17 points.  The Wild will continue with their season play on Saturday, December 10, when they travel to Oakwood to play the Lindsay Lynx and Wednesday, December 14 when they host the Lindsay Lynx at the Cobourg Community Centre at 7:30 pm on the Bowl.
